HAMILTON Kangaroos Football Netball Club is hopping for joy after a promised $125,000 lighting upgrade at Melville Oval was given the go-ahead.
Member for Wannon, Dan Tehan, this week announced the Federal Government would deliver on its funding promise made in the lead-up to the September election.
It means night football could be played at the oval as early 2015.
Kangaroos secretary, Marcus Lowerson said the club was already examining the possibility of a night-time Anzac Day fixture.
That’s what we are aiming for and fingers crossed we can make it happen,” Mr Lowerson said.
“There’s still a lot of boxes that need to be ticked, but the club is delighted with this announcement.
“It’s something we’ve been planning for a long time and it’s good to see some action.”
The Kangaroos would become only the second Hampden Football Netball League club to play regular night matches if the plan is successful.
Cobden is the only other club committed to playing at night.
Mr Lowerson said it was hoped the entire community and not just the football fraternity would get behind the project.
“These lights just open up so many possibilities for the town,” he said.
