TWO Western District Health Service (WDHS) volunteers are the joint recipients of the Charlie Watt Volunteer of the Month award for November.
Eric and Jan Collins are well known faces in the area and joined as volunteers in March 2012 after Eric retired from managing Harvey Norman, Hamilton.
Previously they both volunteered for St John Ambulance in South Australia.
During his 22 years with St John, Mr Collins became the senior career officer in charge and managed more than 1000 volunteers.
They discovered usual retirement activities were not for them and within a month of retiring they were looking for new things to do and went to see WDHS volunteer co-ordinator, Janette Ryan.
“Eric and Jan have been absolutely fantastic,” she said.
“They have plunged head first into all areas of our volunteering, from community transport, helping at the hospital op shop, being a volunteer spokesperson for the Consumer and Friends Network and assisting at nearly all our fundraising events,” Ms Ryan said.
“They have always stepped up to help whenever they can.”
