CASTERTON based Australian number one drag racer Gavin Dohnt is excited about the strength of the field expected to enter the opening round of the Australian National Drag Racing Association Aeroflow Sportsman Drag Racing Association next weekend.
Dohnt, who does not expect to seriously compete for the Australian title in his bike class again this season due to work and family commitments, said the event would likely be the farewell event for his GSXR Suzuki bike after purchasing a new bike over the off-season.
“We are in the process of getting it organised and we are hoping we will have it (the new bike) out towards the end of the season,” Dohnt said.
“We have got a fair bit of work we need to do to it, we want to give it a really good once over, so we will be doing this round on the old girl.
“This will pretty much be her last run at the home track.
“She has done a lot of work, it has been a full time race bike for the last four years and it was our road transport as well as a race bike for three years before that, so she has done a lot of work.
“There is a way you can respect your gear, you don’t need to give it any abuse, and she has been really consistent.”
With more than 20 top-class modified bikes expected to be racing at Portland next weekend Dohnt said he was expecting a very strong field.
