A HANDFUL of local owners struck gold when their horse Restrepo was victorious in the Ballarat Pacing Cup last Saturday night. Portland residents Andrew Welfare, Brett Baker, Colin Hiscock, Darryl Petch and Geoff Geddings combined with several out of town owners to purchase the horse, which is now beginning to pay dividends as a five-year-old with plenty of potential and a form guide the envy of many opposing owners and trainers. The win came as a surprise to many racing pundits as Restrepo stormed home to claim the win against a procession of highly fancied opponents. Restrepo defeated New Zealand horse Christen Me by the narrowest of margins while Caribbean Blaster just missed to finish third. Read more in Friday’s Portland Observer, January 31, 2014.
