A MORE impressive fireworks display than Sydney or London?
Well, Portland may not quite have the quantity of pyrotechnics that explode every New Year’s Eve in the skies over the world’s most breathtaking urban landscapes, but when it comes to certain special fireworks, Portland’s show is ahead of just about everyone.
That’s the view of Calvin Rogers, who was in charge of Tuesday night’s colourful and very popular fireworks display over Portland Bay.
“For the first time this year we used special new red and gold ‘waterfall’ shells, especially imported for us by Fireworks Australia from China,” he said. “They’ve never been seen before in Australia and are rare anywhere in the world. We did two shows, at 10pm and midnight and each lasted for 12 minutes. One special shell is a fountain that we fire out into the bay and the fireworks rise up from the sea. It always gets lots of oohs and aahs from the crowd.”
Mr Rogers said that while Melbourne and some other capital cities have longer shows with more explosions, Portland boasts one of the nation’s best settings and vantage points to enjoy the colourful display.
“People were all along the clifftop and the lawn was packed right across from the hospital,” he said. “Afterwards people on Trawler Wharf and Lee Breakwater told me they enjoyed being so close to the action – elsewhere you are often too far away to really feel like you’re a part of it.
