THE release of year 12 VCE results has prompted concerns on apprenticeship numbers for regional school leavers due to the lack of work available in the south-west region.
Group Training Association of Victoria (GTAV) executive director, Gary Workman said apprenticeship numbers were down 10 to 15 per cent in the traditional trade areas across Australia.
“Employer’s confidence is a little down to be taking on a four year commitment,” Mr Workman said.
“There are also factors around uncertainty of government funding.”
With businesses like Kitset Kitchens closing down in Hamilton, more people are now competing for jobs.
Mr Workman said it was certainly going to have an impact on trainees looking for a job but they needed to remain positive.
