IT was previewed as a race for the last van standing and it very nearly panned out that way, with veteran caravan racer Gavin Barr one of only two drivers still rolling as he took the chequered flag at the Southern 500 Speedway on Saturday night. It was back to back wins in the feature event for Barr and his sixth in total, which is believed to be a race record. While slightly down on last year due to the cold weather and threatening rain, a large crowd were treated to the full spectacle of caravan racing in all of its glory on the night, with the race going a full 20 laps, which was more than could be said for the seven caravans that started the race, with none even remotely resembling a caravan at the end. After last year’s win Barr said he was undecided about whether or not he was going to retire from the iconic race but this week said he was glad he had decided to race on and intended to go again in 2015.
