PORTLAND needs a “game-changing event” in the next 25 years if its population is to double by 2050, according to leading commentator on demographic trends Bernard Salt.
His comments come after the Committee for Portland and the Glenelg Shire Council have been involved in several attempts in recent years to boost the city and the shire’s population.
Australian Bureau of Statistics figures have the greater Portland district having an estimated population of 10,700.
Mr Salt said that using a sporting analogy the “game-changer” would probably come from within the manufacturing/agricultural sectors.
