THERE were smiles all round at the Portland Basketball Stadium on Monday as the Portland Coasters men’s basketball side took a small but enthusiastic group of children through their paces for the first of a series of basketball clinics over the school holiday period.
The program is a part of the YMCA’s vacation care program, with senior Coasters player Josh Nash saying his team was more than happy to be involved as it introduced the game to children who may have previously had no involvement or knowledge of the sport.
“Because the kids in this program are coming to us through the vacation care program itself and not specifically for basketball it is a great chance for us to play with kids who might have never ever seen the game,” Nash said.
Nash said the Coasters as a team are making a point of being involved in community programs such as this as it was both a good way of giving back to the community that supports them while also offering their own players chances to develop their leaderships skills.
