LIVESTOCK managers were out of bed at 3am yesterday, preparing for the first day of Hamilton’s weaner sales.
The annual sales will stretch over two weeks and draw stakeholders from Queensland, New South Wales, South Australia and across Victoria.
In stark contrast to the drought-affected NSW, bountiful paddocks of south-west Victoria have prompted many farmers to hold onto their stock.
“There’s plenty of feed around so some people have chosen to only send their top and second-run calves to sale,” Kerr and Co’s Craig Pertzel said.
“We’re probably yarding about 20 per cent less – there are approximately 3000 calves.”
The sales were due to start at noon yesterday and only last a few hours but for the likes of Mr Pertzel the sales bring two of the busiest weeks for 2014.
