SOME people can hide their drug use but those taking muscle-enhancing steroids wear their addiction on their sleeves.
According to gym users in the region, steroid use is not uncommon and the results – and side effects – are plainly on display
Users will often develop bulk muscle too quickly and out of kilter with what they are lifting in the gym. There can be physical side effects such as acne, bulging veins and hair loss, liver damage, infertility and heart damage in the long term.
There are also notable and worrying impacts on a person’s demeanour. They may appear shaky, edgy and aggressive.
Of course this is not to imply all big and bulky gym users are using illegal steroids. Many will be simply lifting heavy weights, following a good body building program and diet, and using legal protein supplements to advance their physique.
However, there are people in our region looking for what appears to be an easy way to a bigger physique, despite the risks.
One gym user said he had not used or been offered steroids but noticed others who were obviously using the supplements.
