HAMILTON’S George Habel has been made a life member of the Returned and Services League (RSL) Australia because of his passion for the welfare of veterans.
Mr Habel has been a part of the Hamilton RSL for more than 50 years and in that time he has helped raise thousands of dollars and has never said no to someone in need.
He received the life membership on December 19 last year and said it was a bit of a surprise as it was something he did not expect.
Mr Habel said the RSL was important in remembering the veterans that lost their lives and looking after the welfare of the veterans that came home and their families.
“The heart and soul of RSL is welfare and the veterans … my role is welfare and pension officer and my main role is doing claims for veterans with disabilities and that’s what I have been doing for many, many years,” he said.
“Getting them a disability pension is a big satisfaction … after they do get a pension it doesn’t mean it stops there.
“Some of them may not get the full disability pension they may only get part so we try and upgrade at a later date.”
