WORKERS at the threatened AlcoaPointHenry aluminium smelter are keen to snap up any employment opportunities that may happen at Portland Aluminium, according to a leading trade union official.
Australian Workers’ Union state secretary Ben Davis made the comment as clear signs start to emerge that Alcoa appears likely to announce the closure of its Point Henry smelter before the end of March, leaving Portland as the company’s sole Victorian smelter.
However, he said there may only be thin pickings at Portland Aluminium given current economic circumstances.
Alcoa’s Australian communications manager Nichola Holgate told the Portland Observer on Monday that Alcoa had no comment to make about Point Henry or any perceived flow-on developments or impacts on the Portland Aluminium smelter.
The aluminium giant’s review on its Point Henry smelter is expected to be released sometime in the March quarter.
