A RECORD number of Southern Grampians Shire residents became Australian citizens during Australia Day celebrations on Sunday.
Three families and two individuals took the oath and affirmation to officially become citizens in ceremonies in Hamilton and Balmoral.
It was a particularly special day for the Hilsdon family with six members becoming residents.
Colin and Heather Hilsdon, their sons Michael and David, and David’s wife Claire and son Ryan all took the oath.
Michael Hilsdon came to Australia from Oxfordshire on a working holiday visa and decided to stay on.
His father Colin said the rest of the family decided to make the move as well after visiting Michael.
“We all came over for a holiday and decided we liked the country,” he said.
“It wasn’t one of those things where one says ‘I’m going, are you all coming’ but more that we liked it over here and we all came to the same conclusion that we’d like to live here.”
Mr Hilsdon said the family loved living in Australia and in Hamilton.
