SOUTHERN Grampians Shire Council has debated whether to hold more tourism-boosting “blockbuster exhibitions” at the Hamilton Art Gallery.
The agenda item was simply to note the upcoming schedule of exhibits, but discussion shifted to whether the gallery could work to improve the local economy.
Councillor Paul Battista said the gallery should consider hosting the type of exhibitions that had drawn wide audiences at venues in Melbourne and Bendigo.
Cr Katrina Rainsford asked if it would be possible to use the Hamilton Exhibition and Conference Centre instead, and was told there was nothing to prohibit that option.
Shire futures director Michael McCarthy told councillors that the upcoming schedule contained a “good blend” of exhibits and would capitalise on recent successes.
