LAWN Tennis Club’s Michelle Elijah took home both Surry District Tennis Association women’s Championship titles on the Saturday after claiming the singles and partnering clubmate Lyn Johannesen in the doubles to victory.
While Elijah said she had always been keen to contest both the singles and the doubles titles on the weekend she waited until the day before entering the singles event to gauge how numbers would look and when only three players nominated she threw herself into the mix to ensure at the very least each player would play a semi final.
Elijah found herself matched against clubmate Megan Surkitt in the semi, with Surkitt keeping Elijah on the court for a long time for the win, forcing most games to deuce, however on the points that mattered it was Elijah’s experience at singles tennis that stood out and eventually the previous title holder took the set 8-3
The other semi final was played between another of the Lawn brigade, Emma Surkitt, and Tyrendarra’s Tracey Jones.
