AN out of control grass fire on the outskirts of Hamilton burnt 11 hectares on Sunday.
The fire started around 11am north of the Glenelg Highway, between Nigretta Road and Fairburn Road.
Smoke was sent billowing across Hamilton and police were forced to set up road blocks to divert traffic around the area.
Incident Controller Henry Barton said it took fire crews about 20 minutes to bring the fire under control, though crews spent much of the day extinguishing hotspots and preventing the fire from spreading.
“It burnt about 11 hectares of stubble and a bit of swamp,” he said.
“We believe an auger and a truck were working in the paddock at the time.
