THE South Coast Raceway track record managed to survive an invasion of Outlaw Nitro Funny Cars on Saturday when the South Coast Drag Racing Association hosted its annual fundraiser for the Make-A-Wish Australia Portland Branch.
While expectation had been high that the powerful Nitro Funny Cars could possibly break through the 4.0-second barrier it was not to be, with Ray Gucci running the fastest elapsed time of the weekend with a still lightning quick 4.37 seconds across the eighth mile track (201 metres).
The fact that the record remained standing did little to dampen the enthusiasm of either the drivers or the crowd, who appeared to revel in the action and fanfare of the event which continues to grow in popularity each year.
Around 1,500 spectators made their way through the gate on Saturday, helping to raise more than $4,000 for the cause, something which South Coast Drag Racing Association media officer Greg Holland said was a terrific result that the Association was very proud of.
