GRAY Street traders fear Hamilton’s streetscape will be ruined if plans to demolish The George Hotel go ahead.
Architects have put forward an application to Southern Grampians Shire Council to tear down the once popular pub.
But the proposal has been met with anger and upset.
Neighbouring business owner Chris Sharples, who runs Daktari Sport, has organised and promoted a peaceful protest outside the hotel at lunchtime today.
He and other traders in the block would like to see the hotel’s art deco façade retained and restored before it’s too late.
Flint Architects, acting on behalf of Coles developer Gerald Rawson, put forward the demolition application in September hoping to demolish the hotel at the same time as the motel units were torn down.
Their application noted that no plans had been put forward for the future use of the site.
