PIGEON Ponds opening batsman Luke Merryful has hit one of the fastest double centuries in country cricket history when he smashed the Dergholm bowlers all over the ground for a majestic 271 off just 30 overs last Saturday.
It took him just 13 overs to reach his century and a further 12 to add another 150. The ground was lightning fast and suited the hard-hitting opener and he smashed the ball to all points of the boundary during his thrilling innings.
In fact, he hit 17 deliveries over the fence to record 102 in runs from sixes and 120 from fours; an extraordinary feat and one that will go down in the Casterton and District Cricket Association’s annuls as one of the competitions greatest innings of all time.
As far as test cricket records go, only 12 batsmen have recorded 100s in less than 13 overs and only two, New Zealand’s Nathan Astle (153 balls) and Virender Sehwag (168 balls) have managed to make 200 in less than 30 overs
Merryful is in elite company and it is doubtful anyone in Casterton cricket or any other competition in the region for that matter has ever achieved the feat.
