THE 13th annual South West Relay for Life is done and dusted and once again Casterton’s Kelpie Krew was named the top fundraiser after it raised more than $20,000 to help the fight against cancer.
The successful relay was run in perfect weather conditions at Portland’s Nelson Park under the leadership of new chairperson Roger Middleton and his committee.
Tired and weary walkers broke into applause at the end of a long 21 hours of walking around the track when it was announced that this year’s total of $43,000. With some money still to be banked, the total is expected to total well over this mark.
This amount pushed the overall south-west total to more than $1million that has been raised for the Cancer Council by the various Relay for Life events in the south-west during the past 13 years.
Three teams from Portland and the Kelpie Krew received the honour of having a research project named after them by raising more than $5000. The top fundraising award again went to the Kelpie Krew for raising close to $21,000 through the fantastic support and generosity of the Casterton community.
