AN impressive outright win over Merino has ensured that Pigeon Ponds will finish in top place on the Casterton and District Cricket Association’s points table.
The Merino batsmen struggled hard to reach 75 in a keen contest with the Pigeon Ponds bowlers on Saturday. The Ponds boys then used the remaining 38 overs to hit up an encouraging 5-203 by stumps.
By mutual agreement, this game was completed on Sunday afternoon. Ponds captain Ash Simons declared his team’s first innings closed at 6-309. The Wombats showed great improvement in their second innings, but their team total of 155 was not enough to prevent the home team from taking the outright points.
Led by a magnificent 226-run opening partnership by Lionel Balzan (142) and Toby Murrell (58), the aggressive Wando Vale batsmen hit up a very competitive 9-391in their contest with Dergholm.
