ALCOA has left the door open for a small number of Point Henry workers to be redeployed to Portland Aluminium.
It follows a proposal made to Alcoa’s Australian management by Australian Workers Union state secretary Ben Davis after the announcement the Point Henry smelter will close in August, putting 500 employees out of work.
Mr Davis said on Wednesday voluntary redundancies could be offered to employees at the Portland smelter to allow Point Henry workers the opportunity of employment at Portland.
He said the proposal had the full support of AWU members at Portland.
“We are expecting a response from Alcoa on Monday,” he said.
“There are some Point Henry workers who have expressed an interest in moving to Portland.”
Spokeswoman for Alcoa Nichola Holgate confirmed that the AWU proposal had been raised with the company.
