PROMOTING Portland Maritime Heritage Rowers have proven themselves a dominant force in Australian Whaleboat racing once again, winning two of the three Australian Whaleboat Championships contested in Warrnambool on Sunday.
Both the mixed team Black Whales and women’s team Whalers Bluff were able to defend their titles at the event after performing strongly throughout the day, though both of their runs to the title were not without incident or challenge.
After racing brilliantly in their first two heats Black Whales, compiled of Robert Hunt, Dot Leathridge, Gordon Stokes, Sally Fairweather, Patricia Dennis, Les Thomas, David Petrie and Sarah Edwards, almost missed the final after a pair of mistakes cost the boat around two minutes in the third and final heat.
In windy conditions turning at the half way mark had to be precise and while the team was leading approaching the buoy the turn proved too sharp, causing the buoy to pass the wrong side of the boat and forcing the crew to repeat the manoeuvre.
