IT’S time for local businesses to step up and expand Portland’s tourism industry according to local shop owner George Dowden, who runs second-hand book store Paper Nautilus.
With the MS Europa cruise ship heading to our shores on March 8, Mr Dowden is trying to inspire local business owners to utilise the opportunity for it be a great weekend for tourism by keeping their doors open.
Mr Dowden said that he frequently has visitors in his store who have travelled from over Australia who often comment that they don’t know where to visit because most stores are closed on the weekends.
“One of the most common things said to me is there’s nothing to do here,” Mr Dowden said.
Mr Dowden said it was frustrating watching tourists walk around town with most businesses being shut on weekends and denying business opportunities.
“Put yourself out there, prepare yourself, support each other, tell people and be available,” he said.
