VETERAN Portland cyclist Chris Eichler has proven his success at last year’s Victorian Masters Track Championships was no fluke, repeating his success at Thornbury on the weekend to claim gold, silver and bronze medals.
Eichler claimed gold in the Scratch event this year, the event in which he took bronze in 2013, in the Masters 4 category for 40 to 45 year olds.
Making the achievement even better was the fact that Eichler’s class was merged in with the younger category, meaning some of the competitors in his field were 15 years his junior.
Eichler said this age gap saw him change his tactics for the 10-kilometre race slightly.
“Usually in a scratch race I try to set the pace and make if fairly hard, but knowing that the younger riders were there I held back a bit more,” Eichler said.
