WANDO Vale has broken its premiership drought with a decisive five wicket victory over Edenhope in the Casterton and District Cricket Association junior final played at Island Park last weekend.
Wando Vale skipper Jake Balzan won the toss and invited Edenhope to bat last Saturday morning and after an opening partnership of 11, Corey Jarrad and Tynan Shannon grabbed two wickets each to see Edenhope in big trouble at 4-22.
Connor Gould then joined opener Jackson Finnigan in a rapid-fire fifth wicket partnership of 42, but when Gould was caught on the long on boundary for 24, Edenhope was 5-64. Finnigan was bowled soon after for 34 and it was left to Jesse Iese to lead the lower order run chase.
When Iese was dismissed in the 30th over for 29, Edenhope had clawed its way to 106. Wicket takers for Wando Vale were Tynan Shannon with 4-19, Corey Jarrad 2-21, Jake Balzan 2-25 and Che Layley 1-8.
Wando Vale then batted and reached 0-12 at stumps. When they resumed on Sunday afternoon, the overnight batsmen continued to graft for their runs as the Edenhope bowlers struggled with length and direction.
Extras were a big bonus for the Wando Vale total. With the score on 59 Gould enticed Jake Balzan to hole out to Robert Wall at backward square leg for 15.
Corey Jarrad then joined Tynan Shannon and began to attack the bowling. Brody Smith then bowled a straight ball to Shannon that trapped him in front for 34 and the score was 2-89.
Tom Jenkins (5), Che Layley (0) and Jamie Pevitt (1) stayed around with Corey Jarrad (18 not out) to enable the victory target to be reached in the 33rd. When the umpires called off play, Wando Vale was 5-111 and had won by five wickets.
