SOUTHERN Grampians Shire Mobile Library will celebrate a significant milestone over the coming weeks, when it will circulate its 10,000th item.
The state-of-the-art service started in September 2012 and since then has taken library services directly to regional towns, loaning hundreds of books, DVDs and magazines every month.
Mayor Albert Calvano said it had to be the best library on wheels in Australia.
“The vehicle is fitted with the latest in technology including wifi and provides access to a collection of approximately 3000 items,” Cr Calvano said.
“This service has benefited our smaller towns like Dunkeld, Penshurst and Glenthompson who don’t have fixed library services.”
The State Government contributed $320,000 through the Living Libraries Infrastructure Fund Program and council contributed $160,000.
The bus spends about 56 hours on the road each month and has travelled 28,000 kilometres to date.
