THE South West District Football League has moved to strengthen its ties with the Portland Junior Football Association by extending its trial permit system into the 2014 season.
The move followers a meeting of the SWDFL junior sub committee, the PJFA’s Leighann Jackson and Casey Dent and representatives of four of the five southern South West sides, with the Heathmere Football Club an apology due to a clash with a club meeting.
SWDFL president Selwyn Jones said he saw the extension of the permit system as a positive move in ensuring more young footballers made the transition from under-age competition into senior football.
“Last year was the first year that we had an area agreement with the PJFA, which is something that the Hamilton, Casterton and Coleraine associations have had with our northern clubs,” Jones said.
“It is well documented that Jarryd Lewis as a 15 and 16 year old played in premierships with Coleraine as an outstanding junior and more recently Eric Guthrie has had similar success through such a permit system.
