A NEW dahlia grower from Portland has joined the fray of the annual Dahlia and Rose Festival’s display of blooms from Victoria and interstate this weekend.
Debbie Aitken has been helping grow dahlias for years at the Portland Botanical Gardens as part of her job with the Glenelg Shire, but last year entered the festival for the first time with a selection of blooms from her own garden.
Her dahlia garden is still very small, as she only started growing about five years ago after moving house.
“I wanted to start a small flower bed to help define the fence line but because I didn’t know what fence would go in I didn’t want anything permanent,” Ms Aitken said.
“I kept them around because they’re just beautiful. The colour and variety are stunning and inspiring.”
