CLEAN Up Australia Day came and passed this weekend, but only schools organised clean ups.
South West Institute of TAFE Portland campus senior VCAL students planned and organised the annual clean-up at Nuns’ Beach this year along with a second group to clean up the Portland foreshore.
Coordinator Therese Dolman said SWTAFE students have organised a clean up on Nuns’ Beach for the past six years.
“It is a great way for the students to connect with the community and do something which they will be congratulated on,” Ms Dolman said.
“A certificate of participation is issued to those who participated from the Clean Up Australia organisation.”
SWTAFE Portland campus VCAL senior, intermediate and foundation students were involved with the clean up as were a group of adults with a disability.
“Students complete a survey on how and what type of rubbish they found,” Ms Dolman said. “Like most years, cigarette butts were the worst and students reported Nuns’ beach to be relatively clean this year, which is great news.”
