ENERGY and excitement was the tone of Portland even before the MS Europa passengers could disembark on their land adventures on Saturday, with the day being hailed a great success.
Huge crowds flocked to Portland to see the cruise ship first-hand, and while many of the passengers from the Europa headed out of town for a variety of tours and activities, an estimated 120 spent the day in Portland.
The five star-plus German cruise ship was greeted to Portland’s shores with a flurry of activity and curious onlookers, who filled the city’s streets before 9am had struck.
Glenelg Shire Council Mayor John Northcott was on hand to welcome the Europa, and take a tour of the ship.
However Cr Northcott’s pride was directed at the spirit of Portland, whose residents had worked tirelessly to make it a big day.
“The work that’s gone in is just a real credit to everyone that got involved,” Cr Northcott said on Saturday.
