THE Portland Dahlia and Rose Festival had a larger than normal crowd this year, according to Portland Dahlia Society secretary Sue McLean.
Ms McLean said the extra numbers were especially noticeable compared with last year when a sweltering week of weather kept many potential visitors away.
“We had something like 450 through on Saturday, which is pretty big,” she said.
“The weather was perfect and there were plenty of people in the area for the cruise ship and markets. We had lots of day-trippers from Warrnambool and MountGambier and there were even visitors from Adelaide.”
Ms McLean said some growers submit as many as 100 or 200 blooms and one of the festival’s prolific regulars was unable to take part this year, leaving some sections empty.
