PLANS for an emergency helipad at Bentinck Street’s Ploughed Field have been shelved.
Portland District Health is now in the early stages of planning for the helipad to go on its own land between Harbourside Lodge and Seaview House.
PDH chief executive officer Chris Giles said on Tuesday that surveying work had already been done for the new site and a concept design for the helipad at the new site was likely to be available sometime next week.
She said key organisations such as the Glenelg Shire Council and the Committee for Portland had been briefed on the new plans.
“The Ploughed Field will still be needed because it will be in the flight path for the helicopter … lights will be needed near the cliff area and at the field as part of civil aviation requirements,” she said.
“There will also need to be traffic management lights installed on Bentinck St at Tyers St and Otway Crt to warn motorists about incoming or outgoing helicopters.
