SOUTHERN Grampians Shire Council was expected to vote yesterday evening on a recommendation to refuse planning permission to demolish Hamilton’s George Hotel.
A report prepared by Southern Grampians Shire, Leigh Page, and approved by shire futures director, Michael McCarthy, recommends that “a Notice of Refusal to Grant a Permit be issued.”
“There have been no documents provided for any future use or development on this site,” the report stated.
“The proposal will have negative social impacts on the township of Hamilton if this site were to be cleared and no development was undertaken to replace this building.
“A piece of Hamilton history would be lost if the façade of this building was not kept.”
