NINE new recycling bins will be installed along Bentinck Street in Portland after Glenelg Shire Council was successful in receiving a 2013-14 Regional Public Place Recycling Grant.
The council’s project, titled “Get Smart … Street Smart”, was one of 21 public place recycling grant recipients to share in $815,000 of State Government funding aimed at making it easier for people in regional Victoria to dispose of their rubbish and recyclable materials correctly as well as educate the community.
The local program will involve the replacement of 13 of the current 120-litre waste bins in Portland with nine 240-litre waste and nine 240-litre dual unit recycle bins on the shop side of both Bentinck Street and of Julia Street.
There are currently about 40 dual unit recycle bins, which are well utilised, in Portland.
Mayor John Northcott said he was pleased with how the community had responded to recycling momentum in recent years.
