THE clear top two teams throughout the 2013-14 HDCA C grade season, College and St Andrew’s, will meet in the grand final after fighting their way past a brave Hamilton and Branxholme over a very damp weekend.
The semi finals looked in grave danger of being called off as pouring rain began to fall early on Saturday morning, but despite a rain delay or two on each day, the games still managed to get through to their conclusions.
At KFC Oval, Branxholme invited St Andrew’s to bat first, but Nathan Caruana and Darcy McCallum picked off the deliveries they liked the look of, while keeping the rest away from their edges and stumps, and took the score along to a handy 34 before Caruana was caught by David Daly for Andrew McFarlane for 14.
Mal Langley came in at number three, but the runs, unlike the day, dried up completely and although there were three runs between Caruana’s and McCallum’s wickets falling, it took five and a half overs before they were back in dry clubrooms together.
The Bulls were bowling well and making it difficult for the Drews to build momentum, but they couldn’t split Langley and Brett Litchfield until they had added 40 to the total, when Cody Griffiths sent Litchfield back for 26 courtesy of a caught and bowled opportunity.
