FORMER Heywood and District Secondary College student Tom Gorey has been selected as the February recipient of the Blue Light Glenelg Youth Awards.
The awards were kicked off this year to celebrate shire residents between the ages of 10 to 25.
Young people can be nominated by an individual or organisation who have identified outstanding efforts in the field of volunteering, sporting and/or cultural achievements, leadership skills and commitment to their school or local community.
Currently studying a Bachelor of Science at the University of Melbourne, the 18-year-old was selected because of the extra mile he went for his school and community.
Pleased with the recognition Tom said he had no knowledge of the award until his mother told him he had been nominated and selected.
“It was pretty cool,” Tom said.
“It’s nice to be recognised in the community really.”
