NEW exercise equipment next to Fawthrop Lagoon was officially opened in a ceremony on Wednesday by Glenelg Shire Council councillor Geoff White.
Dubbed the PortlandFitnessPark, the new metal equipment replaces the wooden equipment previously occupying the site near the barbecue area on Hood St.
A new fitness circuit has also been established in Merino at LionsPark.
The multipurpose equipment, funded by the Australian Government’s Healthy Communities Initiative and organised by the Get Active Glenelg2Grampians Project, includes chin-up bars, step-ups, sit-up benches and body-dip bars, which can all be used to improve muscle condition and supplement any cardiovascular exercise, including simply going for a walk.
Cr White said the equipment would help raise awareness of the importance of physical activity, increase availability and participation in physical activity programs and improve the local capacity to provide those programs.
“I strongly encourage the community to become familiar with and use the newly installed equipment,” Cr White said.
