DUNKELD’S Community Centre building site has received its official turning of the sod ceremony after the demolition of the old RSL hall was completed this month.
Southern Grampians Mayor, Albert Calvano, Lowan MP Hugh Delahunty, Dunkeld Community Bank chair Gary Simpson, architect Jakob Kelly and community centre committee chair Mary Ann Brown had the honour of performing the ceremony.
Building works on the $1.6 million community centre will now start in earnest after Friday’s ceremony.
Cr Calvano thanked the Dunkeld township, Allan and Maria Myers as well as the Dunkeld community Bank for raising about $500,000 for the centre.
Mr Myers had personally pledged to match every dollar raised by the community with a dollar of his own.
The Southern Grampians Shire contributed $600,000 and the State Government contributed $500,000 towards making the long term project a reality.
“The Dunkeld community is very clear on what they want,” Cr Calavno said.
“They are aiming for top class facilities at this centre.”
