ONLY four years ago Portland mother of four Justine Cain was barely able to walk five kilometres.
In May she will attempt to run her first marathon when she tackles the picturesque but challenging Great Ocean Road Marathon.
The 42-year-old was seriously injured in a car accident 11 years ago, having to undergo a complete knee reconstruction and ongoing rehabilitation to rebuild the strength in her back and core.
As recently as three years ago she was told by those aiding her recovery that she would never be able to run again.
Surprisingly this was the spur that helped propel her to greater things.
“I probably only started being able to walk for about an hour about four years ago,” Cain said.
“I had quite a lot wrong with me, and I had to wait until they had fixed one thing before they fixed the next one.”
