GLENELG Shire’s tourism and manufacturing are expected to the prime beneficiaries when shire councillors undertake a privately-funded exchange to its InternationalFriendshipCity, ZhangjiagangCity in China this year.
The International Relationships Policy principle allows a maximum of two overseas visits – one visit to and one visit from Zhangjiagang – during each term of the council.
Glenelg Shire Mayor John Northcott will join with councillors Geoff White, Anita Rank and Robert Halliday in privately funding their visit to China at a date to be decided later this year.
The Portland Manufacturing Network will also be advised of this proposed visit and relevant business representatives will be invited to participate.
Two local businessmen accompanied Council during their last visit to ZhangjiagangCity in September 2011.
Since then, there have been two student delegations from ZhangjiagangCity, in August of 2012 and 2013, which included a Government delegation with each exchange.
