THE Glenelg Shire gained new Australian citizens on Monday, when Mayor John Northcott officially welcomed the group of 11.
Cr Northcott led the proceedings in the Portland council offices, where he acknowledged this year as the 65th anniversary of Australian citizenship.
The Nationality and Citizenship Act 1948 came into effect on January 26, 1949, and created a new status of Australian citizens.
Cr Northcott congratulated the candidates and said this new status would strengthen the bond they held with Australia.
“Australian citizenship represents full and formal membership of the community of the Commonwealth of Australia, and Australian citizenship is a common bond, involving reciprocal rights and obligations, uniting all Australians, while respecting their diversity,” Cr Northcott said.
