POLICE will be in full force over the Easter period in an effort to maintain safety on the roads.
Commencing yesterday, Operation ‘Soteria’ will run for 12 days and makes up part of the Victoria Police ‘Road to Zero’ Campaign, a project launched last year which aims to reduce fatal and serious injury road tolls by more than 30 per cent by 2022.
Hamilton Highway Patrol Sergeant Scott Williams said: “We’re up to 77 deaths at this point compared to 67 this time last year, and there’s a prediction we could reach 30 more deaths than last year.
“It’s an alarming figure which we’re hoping to turn around, but we need the community’s help.”
Every available unit
The operation, which covers all parts of the Southern Grampians Shire, will have the police force using every unit available to decrease the chance of accidents during the period.
“My entire crew will be working over this period and it’s the same for the smaller stations,” he said.
