IT was an “arm wrestle” that did the Anzac Day spirit proud … but in the end there could be only one victor.
Portland retained the Ted Kenna VC Memorial Cup with a hard fought 9.9 (63) to 6.10 (46) victory against the Hamilton Kangaroos in their Anzac Day encounter at Hanlon Park.
In accepting the cup, Portland senior playing coach Jake Myles told the crowd he hoped the contest did the spirit of the Anzacs proud.
His sentiments were echoed by his Hamilton Kangaroos counterpart.
“It was an intense, hard fought game for four quarters,” Hamilton Kangaroos senior playing coach Jarrod Holt said in his post match interview.
“I’m proud of our boys and I’m sure Jake is of his boys.”
But, of course, the game of football was merely secondary to the big picture of the day.
