HUGE economic potential is on the horizon for Portland with the State Government unveiling the Murray Basin Rail Project.
The project will upgrade the Mildura to Geelong line to standard gauge, which will link to Portland’s already standard gauge line.
$220 million will be injected into the project which will provide a standard gauge connection from the Port of Portland through to the Mildura-Mallee region.
Portland is on the Western standard gauge line, and connects to Ararat, which will soon be connected to the Mildura Freight Line via one of three options upon project completion.
Victorian Premier Denis Napthine said the project will improve the efficiency of goods transportation.
“The Port of Portland will be connected by rail to the Mallee region and therefore provide another international gateway alternative to customers,” Dr Napthine said.
“This will provide the opportunity for a massive boost in the exports of grain, mineral sands and potentially other products through the Port of Portland.”
