THE Great South Coast Group’s board has confirmed its support for a moratorium on the exploration and extraction of coal seam gas in Victoria.
The board, which includes the mayors from the Glenelg, Southern Grampians, Moyne, Warrnambool City, Corangamite and Colac Otway shires as well as other non-municipal representatives, confirmed its stance at a meeting in Portland late last week.
It comes as Lock the Gate Alliance members urge Portland and district residents to attend the anti-fracking public meeting to be held at the Portland Arts Centre on Tuesday, at 7.30pm.
It is understood the meeting will follow a similar format to the meeting held at Digby on April 1 which attracted more than 120 people.
A DVD outlining the effects of fracking and the coal seam gas industry has on land and water supplies, along with presentations from a doctor, hydrologist and a representative from the Environmental Defenders Office, are planned for the meeting.
