IT’S not everyday you come across a pumpkin which weighs as much as a person, but for Hamilton local Stewart Campbell it’s becoming increasingly common.
Having started growing giant pumpkins as a hobby around three years ago, Mr Campbell’s latest pumpkin is his biggest yet, weighing in at an impressive 79.3 kg.
“It’s the third year I’ve grown them, the first one I think was 26 kg then I got one up to nearly 60 kg, and now there’s this one so they’re getting better each year,” he said.
Placing first at the HIRL Giant Pumpkin Competition last month, Mr Campbell said there was a bit of a learning curve to growing the pumpkins known as ‘Atlantic Giants’.
“It was planted in early January and virtually within the first four weeks he appeared on the vine, so I just kept him and weeded all the others out,” he said.
