THERE will be plenty of thrills – and no doubt a few spills – when the intense sport of wheelchair rugby makes it return to Hamilton this weekend.
Players from Victoria, South Australia and Queensland will go wheel-to-wheel in 14 games of fierce competition and supreme skill across two packed days of competition at HILAC.
The 2014 Wheelchair Rugby Hamilton Classic will feature several of the stars from Australia’s 2012 London Paralympics team, which won Australia’s first ever gold medal in wheelchair rugby.
It will also be a homecoming for former Hamilton resident Shane Brand, a silver medallist with the Australian Steelers at the 2008 Beijing Games.
Brand, who was born in South Australia, but educated in Hamilton, was left quadriplegic after a car accident in 2001.
After spending 14 months in hospital, he was encouraged to take up wheelchair rugby by members of the Victorian team, who trained at the same centre where Brand was undergoing rehabilitation.
