HEYWOOD and District Secondary College Year 12 student Kezlee Pickett is hoping to improve her leadership skills when she takes part in the National Indigenous Youth Parliament (NIYP) later this month.
The 18-year-old will join 49 other indigenous youth aged 16-25 years in a week-long leadership program in Canberra from May 28 to June 3.
Kezlee said she was really pleased she had been selected for the program.
“I hope it will give me more self-esteem and confidence … I have been doing some work with youth at Winda-Mara and I think part of the program involves debating a Bill on how to increase employment in our communities so there will be a lot of research needed,” she said.
The program includes expert training in how government works, how laws are made, public speaking and dealing with the media.
